Just Energy Alberta L.P. is an independent natural gas and electricity retailer that provides fixed price programs to Albertans. Just Energy Alberta L.P. is owned by Just Energy Inc., a Canada-based publicly traded income trust. top

  2. How is my natural gas rate determined now?

If you are currently not on a program with a gas retailer, you are paying the regulated rate for natural gas from your regulated provider. Your provider estimates what it anticipates paying for natural gas for the month, adds or subtracts any balances for over and underestimation in previous months, and, based on this forecast, proposes a rate to the Alberta Utilities Commission. Upon approval, the provider will begin charging this rate and from month to month, will review and change the rate to reflect actual costs of natural gas. top

  3. How is my electricity rate determined now?

If you are currently not on a program with an electricity retailer, you are paying the regulated rate for electricity (known as the RRO, or Regulated Rate Option). To determine the price of your electricity, your regulated provider proposes a purchasing plan and rate to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). Once approved, this rate then becomes the RRO which is charged to every customer. Each month, the provider will review the rate and issue what is known as a “rate rider” to compensate for losses/gains caused by offering a fixed rate to consumers. top

  4. How does my Natural Gas or Electricity Price Protection Program work?

Just Energy Alberta L.P. purchases large quantities of natural gas and electricity under long-term agreements and then arranges to supply this natural gas or electricity at a fixed rate throughout the term of your agreement. 15. How does the budget billing plan work?

    How Your Payment is Calculated

To calculate your budget billing payment, which will show on the supplier's section of your bill, Just Energy: i) estimates your annual gas and/or electricity use according to past usage, utility estimates, and/or actual usage, and multiplies that amount by your contract price then; ii) adds the JustGreen gas and/or electricity charge (if selected) plus any additional amounts; and iii) adds any current budget billing balance on your account. This total is then divided by your remaining term to arrive at your monthly budget billing amount.

Your Budget Billing Amount May Change

We will re-evaluate your budget billing amount to determine if it is in line with your actual usage. If the re-evaluated budget billing amount is either 25%* above or below your current budgeted amount, the newly adjusted amount will be automatically reflected on your next bill statement.

*Note that this variance range is subject to change at Just Energy's discretion.

    Plan Cancellation and Reinstatement

You may be removed from budget billing if you fail to pay two consecutive bills on time. Reinstatement may only occur once during a 12-month period by paying any unpaid budget billing amount and calling us. If you wish to opt out of the budget billing program prior to the end of your contract term, any outstanding balance must be settled at that time, and you will not be permitted to opt back in for at least 6 months.

  21. What is the Ontario System-Wide Electricity Supply Mix?
  22. What is a Kilowatt (kW) and a Kilowatt Hour (kWh)?
  1. Who is Just Energy Ontario L.P.?

Just Energy Ontario L.P. (“Just Energy”) is an independent natural gas and electricity supplier licensed by the Ontario Energy Board. Just Energy is one of North America’s leading energy suppliers and provides residential and commercial customers in the province of Ontario with Natural Gas and Electricity Price Protection Programs that reduce or eliminate their exposure to fluctuating energy prices. top

  2. What are the benefits of enrolling on an OES Price Protection Program?

By choosing a Just Energy Price Protection Program, you will enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you have a secured rate. You will also receive the same quality of service, delivery and billing from your local utility (please note that you may not be eligible for equal billing with your local utility on our program). By choosing Just Energy as your energy supplier, you are protecting yourself from a fluctuating commodity rate, while retaining the services of your local utility. top

  3. Are you licensed to market natural gas and electricity in Ontario?

Just Energy is licensed by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to market natural gas under Gas Marketer License GM-2010-0152 and electricity under Electricity Retailer License ER–2010-0153. top

  4. How is my natural gas rate determined now?

If you are not currently on a program with a gas marketer, you are paying a regulated utility rate for natural gas. Your local utility estimates what it anticipates the cost for supplying natural gas will be, and, based on this forecast, the utility proposes a rate to the Ontario Energy Board. Upon approval, the utility will begin charging this rate, and quarterly throughout the year the utility will review and may change the rate to reflect the actual costs of supply. Any discrepancy between the amount the utility received for natural gas and the amount it paid is billed to its customers as an adjustment. top

  5. How is my electricity rate determined now?

If you are currently using less than 250,000 kWh of electricity per year, or are otherwise considered to be a ‘designated’ consumer, then you are eligible for the Regulated Price Plan (“RPP”). Under the RPP, customers pay for electricity under a tiered pricing structure that may vary every 6 months. If you are not eligible for the RPP, then you are paying the cost of electricity, calculated on a monthly basis as determined by the Independent Electricity System Operator. top

  6. What is the Provincial Benefit?

The Provincial Benefit accounts for differences between the market price and rates paid to regulated generators, and the costs of generation contracts held with the Ontario Power Authority. This is a credit or charge determined by the Ontario government to be assigned to all Ontario electricity consumers. This adjustment was implemented on January 1, 2005 and the rate is adjusted monthly. The amount calculated and applied by utilities to non-RPP consumer invoices varies based on the meter read/bill cycle for each customer. The Provincial Benefit is set to reflect the difference between the market price and: top

    • The regulated rate paid to Ontario Power Generation's baseload generating stations.
    • Payments made to suppliers that were awarded contracts through the government's RFP process.
    • Contracted rates paid to Non-Utility Generators.
  7. What is the ONPA or OPG rebate?

The Ontario government established a rebate on 85% of the output of OPG Non-Prescribed Assets (ONPA Rebate). This includes Ontario Power Generation's coal-fired and smaller hydro electric operations. The rebate is set to expire in 2009. The rebate is equal to the difference between the market price and a set capped rate for the OPG output. Monies collected above the set price will be refunded to non-RPP consumers paying the wholesale price and to customers on retail contracts. top

    • For the period from May 2007 until April 2008, the rate cap is 4.7 cents per kWh.
    • For the period beginning April 2008, the rate cap is 4.8 cents per kWh.
    • RPP customers will not receive the rebate directly: it is included in RPP prices. Just Energy customers will receive the rebate directly from Just Energy.
  8. What is Final Variance Settlement?

For customers on the RPP, the difference between the amount consumers have paid for electricity and the amount that has been paid to generators is tracked in an account. Consumers who move out of province or leave the RPP for a retailer or spot market pricing will need to settle their share of the balance of that account. This may result in a credit or a charge, depending on price of electricity paid to generators.

For customers who remain on the RPP, the amount of the settlement will be rolled into the new pricing set every six months. Customers who protect their price with Just Energy will only pay a one time settlement. top

  9. How do the Price Protection Programs work?

Just Energy enters into commitments for large quantities of natural gas and electricity under long term agreements and then arranges to supply this energy at a protected rate throughout the term of your agreement. You will continue to receive your delivery of energy and your bill from your local utility. In the case of electricity agreements, there is also a balancing adjustment, as described in our electricity agreements. top

  10. Can anybody join the Price Protection Programs?

Most Ontario residents reside in utility service areas that are eligible for the Just Energy program. Please contact us for specific information on eligibility. top

  16. What is green energy?

Green energy refers to environmentally friendly, low-polluting sources of energy. It can also be referred to as renewable energy. The use of green energy reduces negative impacts to the environment and decreases harmful greenhouse gas emissions. top

  17. Why should I care about green energy?

We all contribute to the release of harmful greenhouse gases when we burn fossil fuels to generate electricity, power our cars and heat and light our homes. Climate change resulting from greenhouse gas emissions is a leading, global environmental threat.

Locally, Massachusetts has set a goal to promote renewable energy and sharply reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. This is the ‘2,000 MW by 2020 legislation’. With our green program, you can start making a difference today. In fact, since 2007, our customers have helped generate over 600,000 MWh of renewable energy. That’s enough energy to power 60,000 homes for a year! top

  18. How does JustGreen Power work?

On behalf of JustGreen power customers, Just Energy purchases certified Renewable Energy Credits from major renewable power producers in Massachusetts and other sources in New England. When you choose JustGreen power, you’re helping to ensure that more clean energy is added to the electricity grid from renewable sources. top

  19. How does Just Energy ensure that my contributions are going towards green energy?

We are audited yearly by internationally recognized accounting firm, Grant Thornton LLP. When you purchase our green products, you can be sure that your money is going exactly where we say it is: to renewable energy (or carbon offset projects). top

  20. Why should I pay more for JustGreen on top of my regular utility bill?

Green energy is generally more costly to produce than conventional energy. However, the price for green energy includes the environmental value of generating renewable energy.
